Laura Ferrara

Laura is an Information Governance Consultant and a data protection expert. She qualified as a lawyer in Italy and holds a master’s degree in international law from LUISS Guido Carli University. Laura gained experience in both immigration law and human rights while working for an Italian law firm. She then specialised in data protection and data privacy with an LL.M. from Queen Mary, University of London. Laura is now a certified Privacy Professional/Europe (CIPP/E).

As a Data Protection Advisor, Laura undertook a secondment in the data protection office of a large London NHS Trust, gaining invaluable knowledge in the healthcare industry as well as furthering her data protection expertise. She is a subject matter expert in UK and European data protection legislation, including GDPR, UK GDPR, Data Protection Act 2018 and PECR. As a Consultant, Laura has a number of specialisms, but is particularly experienced in the area of Research Governance and International Data Transfers.

In her daily tasks, Laura undertakes Data Protection Impact Assessments on complex projects, working closely with organisations to fully understand all the logistical and technical aspects of the data processing to provide a comprehensive risk assessment with a series of constructive mitigations. She works on projects involving multiple organisations sharing a high volume of data, requiring the review and draft of data processing and data sharing agreements.

Thanks to her work in the area of research governance, Laura has extensive experience reviewing and submitting applications to the Confidentiality Advisory Group of the Health Research Authority in order to obtain support for the Section 251 exemption of the NHS Act 2006.

As a consultant, Laura enjoys working collaboratively and closely with clients, helping them to reach their goals while maintaining compliance with the applicable data protection legislations. Laura is passionate about the challenges and opportunities that data protection legislations pose to organisations, and she is keen to always improve her understanding and interpretation of the law to offer clients creative solutions to meet their goals.

Outside of work, Laura enjoys volleyball, visiting art galleries, and engaging in any outdoor activity.
